One-pot synthesis of furoflavanones

Several new furoflavanones (5-7) have been synthesized from hydroxy acetyl benzofuran and an aryl aldehyde in presence of piperidine. These furoflavanones were dehydrogenated to furoflavones (8-10) using DDQ (2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano- 1,4-benzoquinone). The chalcone synthesized (4b) using 1% ethanolic sodium hydroxide from hydroxy acetyl benzofuran and aryl aldehyde shows promising antiinflammatory activity.
