The reaction of 2-alkoxycarbonylmethylene-5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-ones with aniline, p-toluidine, and p-anisidine leads to the formation of 1,5-diaryl-2-alkoxycarbonylmethyl-2-hydroxy-2,3-dihydropyrrol-3-ones and 2-arylamino(alkoxycarbonyl)methyl-5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-ones.The effect of solvents on the direction of the reaction and on the yield of the yield of the products are discussed.
