Detection of explosives is of utmost importance due to the threat to human security as a result of illegal transport and terrorist activities. Picric acid (PA) is widely used in the industrial and military fields, and is inadvertently able to contaminate the environment and groundwater, posing a threat to human health. Achieving the detection of explosives at the parts per billion (ppb) level using chemosensors is a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that triphenylamine based fluorescent chemosensors tris(4′-carbethoxybiphenyl) amine (TCEPA) and tris(4′-carboxybiphenyl) amine (TCPA) exhibit superior detection capability for PA in solution state at the ppb level (40 ppb and 5 ppb respectively) and efficient quenching behaviours in the vapor phase at room temperature. In addition, fluorescent test strips have been prepared by dip-coating Thin Layer Chromatography (TCL) for trace detection of PA at the attogram level.
Molecular Vises for Precisely Positioning Ligands near Catalytic Metal Centers in Metal-Organic Frameworks

We report the construction of a molecular vise by pairing a tritopic phenylphosphorus(III) linker and a monotopic linker in opposite positions within a metal-organic framework. The angle between these linkers at metal sites is fixed upon changing the functionality in the monotopic linker, while the distance between them is precisely tuned. This distance within the molecular vise is accurately measured by 1H-31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This unveils the impact of the distance on catalytic performance without interference from electrostatic effects or changes in the angle of the ligand, which is unprecedented in classic organometallic complexes.
Molecular Vise Approach to Create Metal-Binding Sites in MOFs and Detection of Biomarkers

supporting information, p. 7120 - 7125 (2018/06/15)
We report a new approach to create metal-binding site in a series of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), where tetratopic carboxylate linker, 4′,4′′,4′′′,4′′′′-methanetetrayltetrabiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid, is partially replaced by a tritopic carboxylate linker, tris(4-carboxybiphenyl)amine, in combination with monotopic linkers, formic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, benzoic acid, isonicotinic acid, 4-chlorobenzoic acid, and 4-nitrobenzoic acid, respectively. The distance between these paired-up linkers can be precisely controlled, ranging from 5.4 to 10.8 ?, where a variety of metals, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ag+, Cd2+ and Pb2+, can be placed in. The distribution of these metal-binding sites across a single crystal is visualized by 3D tomography of laser scanning confocal microscopy with a resolution of 10 nm. The binding affinity between the metal and its binding-site in MOF can be varied in a large range (observed binding constants, Kobs from 1.56×102 to 1.70×104 L mol?1), in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of these crystals can be used to detect biomarkers, such as cysteine, homocysteine and glutathione, with ultrahigh sensitivity and without the interference of urine, through the dissociation of metal ions from their binding sites.
Amide-containing luminescent metal-organic complexes as bifunctional materials for selective sensing of amino acids and reaction prompting

Two new cerium-based luminescent metal-organic complexes (MOCs), Ce-BBAS and Ce-TBAS, were achieved via self-assembly of two and three additional free amide-functionalized ligands and cerium(iii) nitrate, respectively. These two MOCs exhibit different opening size and inner cavities. The smaller metal-organic triple-stranded helicate Ce-BBAS exhibits high selectivity toward aspartic acid (Asp) over other natural amino acids, with the detection limit of ca. 0.26 μM, providing the first artificial receptor that can specifically discriminate Asp over other amino acids in a luminescence enhancement manner. As a comparison, the bigger metal-organic tetrahedron Ce-TBAS doesn't reflect this nature, demonstrating size-selective sensing. In addition, these two MOCs could also work as luminescent chemosensors towards salicylaldehyde derivatives, and feature confined cavities and amide groups as a base catalytic driving force to enable the Knoevenagel condensation reactions.
