A Barbier-type propargylation of azo compounds with γ- trialkylsilylated propargylic bromides has been achieved using reactive barium as a low-valent metal in THF. Corresponding propargylated hydrazines (α-adducts) were exclusively formed not only from azobenzenes (diaryldiazenes) but also from dialkyl azodicarboxylates.
