Chlorophenylcarbene reacts with benzofuran to give the cyclopropane derivative 3, which undergoes thermal opening of the three-membered ring to give the benzopyrilium cation 5.With aniline, 3 forms the quinoline 11 containing two C atoms of the starting compound 1 in positions 2 and 4.
