Pseudo four-component synthesis of benzopyranopyrimidines

An efficient and simple method for the synthesis of new benzopyranopyrimidines via a pseudo four-component reaction of salicylic aldehydes, malononitrile and various amines in the presence of a catalytic amount of LiClO4 is reported. The advantages of this procedure are mild reaction conditions, high yields of products and operational simplicity.

A cost-effective and eco-friendly synthesis of benzopyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives has been developed via three component one-pot tandem approach by condensing different salicylaldehydes and secondary amines with malononitrile in the presence of TiO2–SiO2 catalyst at 80°C under solvent-free conditions. Mild experimental conditions, reusability of the catalyst, and cost effectiveness are the merits of this procedure. Compounds 4g, 4h, and 4i bearing 2-OMe group on the hydroxyphenyl group linked to the central carbon present in between the two nitrogen atoms of the pyrimidine ring were found to exhibit good antioxidant activity while other compounds have moderate antioxidant activity.

An efficient and environmentally benign protocol for the pseudo four-component synthesis of benzopyranopyrimidines via condensation of salicylic aldehydes, malononitrile and various amines catalyzed by ZrOCl2?8H2O as an inexpensive and eco-friendly catalyst with high catalytic activity under solvent-free conditions is reported. This protocol provides a new and improved method for obtaining benzopyranopyrimidines in terms of good yields, simple experimental procedure and short reaction time.
