Also known as aqua fortis and spirit of niter, it has the chemical formula HNO3 and is primarily used in manufacturing ammonium nitrate for fertilizers, making explosives, and in the chemical industry for various processes. It can also be used for etching metals and purifying gold. Its production involves the oxidation of ammonia at high temperature and pressure in presence of a catalyst.
