Oxidation of pinoresinol (1a) with two equivalents of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) gives 2,6-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-3,7-dioxabicycloocta-1,5-diene (6).That phenolic oxidation has taken place via a quinonemethide has been demonstrated by the failure of eudesmin (1b) to react with DDQ under similar conditions even for a prolonged period.
