p-Di(1,2-difluoro-2-chlorovinyl)benzene was obtained by the reaction of p-phenylenedimagnesium bromide with trifluorochloroethene. Both chlorine atoms in the product are capable of being substituted by lithium during metallation with butyllithium. The dilithium derivative was converted by reaction with carbon dioxide into trans,trans-p-di(1,2-difluoro-2-carbvoxyvinyl)benzene and by reaction with N-formylpiperidene into trans,trans-p-di(1,2-difluoro-2-formylvinyl)benzene.The latter exhibits dual reactivity; it reacts with the C-nucleophile malononitrile at the aldehyde group and with the N-nucleophile piperidine at the β-carbon atom.
