Description

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is an 84 amino acid hormone involved in calcium regulation in counteraction to calcitonin. PTH regulates serum phosphate levels and vitamin D biosynthesis. N-terminal peptides of PTH are used to elicit and study a wide variety of responses in target cells.

Active fragment (1-34) of endogenous human parathyroid hormone: Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men at increased risk of fractures Treatment of corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis

Metabolism

No metabolism or excretion studies have been performed. Peripheral metabolism of PTH is believed to occur by non-specific enzymatic mechanisms in the liver followed by excretion via the kidneys. The 24-hour urine excretion of calcium was reduced by a clinically unimportant amount (15%).
