A convenient, general synthesis of 2-methyl-2,3-dihydrofuro quinolines is described from o-nitrobenzaldehydes.The benzaldehydes (1a-c) on reaction with phosphorane 2 provide (E)-ethyl-α-allylcinnamates (3a-c) in high yields.These esters 3a-c on reduction folllowed by acid catalysed cyclisation give 2,3-dihydrofuro quinolines (5a-c).
