Condensation of either 2,3-diphenyl-6-formyl-5-methoxyindole (1) or 2,3-diphenyl-6-formyl-1-methyl-5-methoxyindole (2) with hippuric acid (in acetic anhydride) afforded 4--2-phenyloxazolin-5-one (3) or its 1-N-methyl derivative (4) which subsequently were reacted with various reagents, yielding thus compounds 5-16 (see the text for their formulas).Structures of all new products were supported by analyses as well as IR and 1H NMR spectra.
