The reaction of ethyl diethoxyacrylate with alkynylalkoxycarbene metal complexes affords 6-ethoxy-2H-pyranylidene metal complexes (M=Cr, W) through a plausible cycloaddition, followed by conrotatory cyclobutene opening and final cyclization at the carbene centre; mild dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) oxidation of the resulring complex gives the free ligand quantitatively.
