Halodestannylation in phenylperchlorophenyltin system

Facile and specific cleavage of tin-carbon bond(s) (destannylation) has been found to occur when unsymmetrical tetraorganotin, (C6H5)nSn(C6Cl5)4-n (n = 2, 3) are treated with halogens (Br2 and I2), interhalogens (ICl and IBr) and antimony pentachloride (SbCl5).In most cases the tin-phenyl bond is cleaved preferentially over the identically placed tin-pentachlorophenyl bond.A mechanism of the reaction has also been provided, and attempts have been made to explain the observed anomalies.
