Poly4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b :4,5-b ']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4b ]thiophene-4,6-diyl, commonly known as PTB7, is a semiconducting polymer used in organic photovoltaics. It has an energy efficiency of 9.15% and can act as an electron donor with narrow optical band gaps and excellent π-π conjugation while forming a nanocomposite with fullerenes. PTB7 is known for its high solubility in a wide range of solvents, making ink preparation and filtration simple.

Uses

Used in Organic Photovoltaics:
PTB7 is used as an active layer in polymer:fullerene solar cells, enhancing the overall performance by increasing light absorption and improving electron mobility. It provides some of the highest reported efficiencies for these solar cells due to its extended absorption into the near infra-red and lower HOMO level.
Used in Ink Preparation:
PTB7's high solubility makes it an excellent candidate for a variety of coating techniques, including ink-jet printing, spray coating, and blade coating. At typical concentrations for spin-coated devices, a standard batch of 100 mg can produce enough ink to coat 200 substrates, even accounting for ink loss during preparation and filtration.
Used in Research:
PTB7 is a cost-effective method to increase the performance and impact of devices and data for a wide range of organic photovoltaic (OPV) related research. It has been shown to reach efficiencies of up to 9.2% power conversion efficiency (PCE) in the literature when used with new interface materials and architectures.
