The mechanism of the superacid transannular cyclization of 3,4-dimethyl-cis-bicyclonona-3,7-diene to brendane derivatives was studied.A deuterium label was used, and the conformational composition and the barriers to inversion were calculated by molecular mechanics for the initial diene and for the carbocations formed during its protonation.
