α-Bromovinyl phenyl sulphone 1 undergoes smooth Michael addition-cyclization reactions with active methylene compounds to give polyfunctional cyclopropanes 3 and dihydrofurans 4 in good yields.The ratios of the products vary with the solvent basicity.In less basic solvents, the formation of 3 is predominant, while in the more basic solvents, the yields of dihydrofurans 4 are increased.The reaction pathways are also discussed.
