We have studied the properties of 1-aryloxyanthraquinones in polymer films. The nature of the substituent is shown to affect the physicochemical properties of photochromic compounds (PCC): the position of the absorption maxima of the initial and the photo-induced form (PIF), the extinction, the quantum yield, and the photoisomerisation rate constant. The quantum yields have been determined as a function of the wavelength of irradiation (0.03-0.74).We have studied the temperature dependence of the rate of photo-conversion of PCC and we have determined the activation energies of the photoisomerisation of the PCC and of the dark decomposition of the PIF, which are equal (respectively) to 0.5-8.8 and 12-29 kcal mol-1.We show that the characteristics of these layers could be suitable for practical photochromic materials.
