Complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) with 4-benzamido-1-isatin-3-thiosemicarbazone (H2BITS) are reported and have been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivities, magnetic moments and spectral (IR, visible) measurements.IR spectra show that H2BITS behaves as a dianionic or monoanionic tetradentate ligand or as a dianionic or monoanionic or neutral tridentate ligand. The molecular weight determinations suggest a polymeric nature for the copper complexes.Spectral and magnetic studies suggest a tetrahedral structure for Co(HBITS)Ac.H2O and an octahedral structure for both Co(H2BITS)Cl2H2O and Ni(H2BITS)Cl2H2O.The diamagnetic behaviour of copper complexes were discussed. All the complexes are non-electrolytes.Metal complexes of thiosemicarbazide and thiosemicarbazones have recently attracted special attention due to their activity against smallpox, viral diseases and certain kinds of tumour (1-3).Several 4-benzamido-3-thiosemicarbazone complexes have been reported (4-8).However, no work has been traced concerning the complexes of 4-banzamido-1-isatin-3-thiosemicarbazone (H2BITS).
