Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) dissolves readily in THF, when the methylene-bridged dialuminium compound R2Al-CH2-AlR2 [R = CH(SiMe3)2] 1 with two coordinatively unsaturated aluminium atoms is adde

The title compound 1 is formed by melting the peralkylated R2Al-CH2-AlR2 (R = CH(SiMe3)2) with the tetrachloro derivative Cl2Al-CH2-AlCl2 at 125 deg C.Crystal structure analysis reveals an Al-Cl bridged dimer with a heteroadamantane structure.Reaction of 1 with neopentyl lithium or trimethylsilylmethyl lithium yields only the dismutation products AlR2 (R = CH2CMe3 and CH2SiMe3).From the missing methylene bridge oligomeric or polymeric species are formed presumably; these could not be isolated as pure compounds.
