Structures in Langmuir-Blodgett films of amphiphilic tetrathiafulvalenes and tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane CT complex

An asymmetric TTF derivative 1 having two arms substituted by amide and chiral groups was synthesized and its CT complex with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7', 8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (1-F4TCNQ) were also prepared. Thin film formation at the air-water interface and the film deposition on substrates of 1 and 1-F4TCNQ were investigated. When we deposited the film of 1-F4TCNQ prepared on pure water onto a mica surface by a single upstroke withdrawal, curved nanowire structures were observed on the thin films. On the contrary, 1 without F4TCNQ showed three-dimensional dome structures on the thin films, and the morphologies of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films depended on the existence of F4TCNQ. An average dimension of nanowire was 6.0 (height)×500 (width)×10000 (length) nm3.
