Under conditions of base catalysis peri-hydroxy-substituted naphthaldehydes react with one or two moles of methylene-active nitriles, forming open-chain or heterocyclic condensation products, which are converted under the conditions of acid catalysis into previously unknown 3-cyanonaphthooxepin-2-ones.
