Reduction of gibberellin A13 trimethyl ester in tetrahydrofuran with lithium aluminium hydride affords the known tetra-ol together with some partial reduction products including 20 -> 19 lactones and C-20 esters.The conversion of these to 3,7-dideoxy-19,20-ethers and 20 -> 19 -lactones by hydrogenolysis of the toluene-p-sulphonates has been studied.The oxidation of a 19 -20 ether to a 19 -> 20 lactone with ruthenium tetraoxide is described.
