The differences in the direction of acylation of norbornadiene and 1,5-cyclooctadiene by acetyl and pivaloyl fluoroborates were demonstrated. The differences are explained by the different forms in which the acetyl and pivaloyl fluoroborates exist, i.e., in the form of a donor-acceptor complex and in the form of an ionic salt respectively. The different nature of the acetyl and pivaloyl fluoroborates also shows up in the acylamidation of norbornadiene and 1,5-cyclooctadiene by the acetyl fluoroborate-acetonitrile and pivaloyl fluoroborate-acetonitrile complexes.
