Nifekalant hydrochloride, also known as Shinbit, is a novel and pure class III anti-arrhythmic agent that was introduced in Japan for the treatment of serious ventricular arrhythmias. It is a non-selective blocker of myocardial repolarizing potassium currents and lacks any β-adrenergic blocking effect. Nifekalant hydrochloride is a yellow solid and has been shown to significantly prolong action potential duration, atrial and ventricular refractory periods in various studies. It also inhibits the human multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) transporter 1 (MATE1).
