It belongs to the chemical class of aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides and works by inhibiting the enzyme acetyl CoA carboxylase, which is essential for lipid synthesis in plants. Cloquintocet-mexyl is typically applied as a foliar spray and is rapidly absorbed by plants, leading to the disruption of lipid production and eventual death of the target weeds.
