A general synthesis of 4-acetoxy-1-oxyazetidin-2-ones is described.Reaction of these compounds with certain nucleophiles caused β-lactam cleavage rather than displacement of the acetoxy group, as occurs with the simpler compound 4-acetoxyazetidin-2-one.
