General Description

Molybdenum disulfide is a chemical compound made up of two elements, molybdenum and sulfur. It has a simple definition as hexagonal MoS2. This chemically inorganic compound is categorized as a transition metal dichalcogenide, and is commonly found as a naturally occurring mineral known as molybdenite. Notable for its lubricant properties, MoS2 is known to retain its lubricity in harsh conditions including in extremely high vacuum. It’s also used in creating electronics, since its layers can be isolated into two-dimensional substances. Moreover, it has a similar structure to graphite, consisting of layered sheets of atoms but unlike graphite, it is a direct band gap semiconductor.
