Aminopyridines were condensed with trihaloacetaldehyde under mild conditions to give 2-hydroxy-2-(pyridylamino)-1,1,1-trihaloethanes, which has aminoalkyalting properties.With aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid, these trihaloethanes give the products of substitution of the hydroxyl group by an aryl residue.These products are smoothly converted upon heating to give imidazopyridine derivatives.
