The first crystal structure of a cis-hydridoacylmetal complex, namely [(NP3)Rh(H)(COMe)]BPh4 (1), has been determined by X-ray methods (NP3 = N-(CH2CH2PPh2)3). The Rh center is coordinated by the four donor atoms of NP3 and by mutually cis-disposed hydride and acetyl ligands in a distorted-octahedral geometry. Complex 1 in THF reacts with NaBH4 to give the Rh(I) σ-acetyl [(NP3)Rh(COMe)], which in turn converts to 1 by treatment with triflic acid. Reaction of the hydride formyl complex [(NP3)Rh(H)(CHO)]BPh4 with NaBH4 yields the hydride carbonyl [(NP3)Rh(H)(CO)].
