The reaction of arylazoxy aryl sulfones with norbornene in the presence of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(O) was found to give cis, exo-2,3-norbornane-fused 2,3-dihydrobenzotiophene 1,1-dioxides in good yield.

The reactions of arylazo aryl sulfone and arylazoxy aryl sulfones with norbornene in the presence of a tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) were found to give cis,exo-1,2,3,4,4a,9b-hexahydro-1,4-methanodibenzothiophene 5,5-dioxides in good yield.The reaction mechanism involving aryl(arylsulfonyl)palladium(II) species as a common intermediate in both reactions is proposed.The result of an X-ray single crystal structure analysis of the novel reaction product is also described. Key words: Arylazo aryl sulfone; arylazoxy aryl sulfone; arylsulfonylation; X-ray diffraction.
