Formation of 2-aryl-3(2H) benzofuranones in the reaction of diethylbromomalonate with 2-hydroxydesoxybenzoins is reported along with their further conversion into 2-arylbenzofurans.

A range of 2-aryl-6-methoxy-3(2H)-benzofuranones 26-32, which are seen as precursors to 2-aryl-3(2H)-benzofurans, have been prepared by arylation of allyl β-ketoester 18 with aryllead(IV) reagents.
