3-Chloro-4-methyl-2,6-dinitrophenol, also known as picofen, is a chemical compound with the formula C7H5ClN2O5. It is a yellow crystalline solid that is used as a pesticide and antiseptic. Picofen is highly toxic and exposure to it can cause skin and eye irritation, as well as respiratory issues and even death. It works by disrupting the electron transport chain in mitochondria, leading to a decrease in ATP production and ultimately cell death. Due to its toxicity and potential for environmental harm, its use is highly regulated and is banned in many countries.
