Three synthetic procedures have been developed for a new class of phosphorus ylide containing conjugate heterocycles, 3-oxo-λ5-benzophospholes. The key to the formation of the hetero-cycle is unusual intramolecular acylation of a phosphorus ylide forming an endocyclic ylide. Several types of 2-substituted benzophospholes are synthesized, some of which show fluorescence.
