Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of furoquinolines

In the present work eight new 1-(8-methyl-furo [2,3-b] quinolin-2-yl) ethanone derivatives [IVa-h] were synthesized. The structures of the synthesized compounds were settled on the basis of IR, 1H NMR and mass spectral data. All the synthesized compounds have been screened for their antimicrobial activity. Some of the tested compounds exhibited more potent antibacterial activity against E coli (MTCC 443, Gm-ve), P. aeruginosa (MTCC 1688, Gm-ve), S. aureus (MTCC 96, Gm+ve) and S. pyogenus (MTCC 442, Gm+ve) than that of standard. However, all the synthesized compounds exhibited potent to mild antifungal activity against C. albicans (MTCC 227) and mild antifungal activity against A. niger (MTCC 282) and A. clavatus (MTCC 1323).
