The assembly of HgI2 and ligand L (3-bpfob) [L: 1,3-bis(nicotinoyl) o-phenylenediamine] led to the formation of a novel coordination polymer [HgI2(3-bpfob)]n. The complex was characterized by x-ray crystallography, infrared (IR), and fluorescence spectra and thermal properties (thermal gravimetry [TG], differential thermal gravimetry [DTG], and differential scanning analysis [DSC]). The title compound crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c. The central ion Hg(II) is fourcoordinated in a typical distorted tetrahedral geometry, which is extended to form one-dimensional linear structure through -LHgI 2-unit.
