Usage

General Description

Barium nitrite is a chemical compound with the formula Ba(NO2)2. It is a white, crystalline solid that is highly toxic and can be explosive in certain forms. Barium nitrite is primarily used in the pyrotechnics industry as a colorant and oxidizer for green fireworks. It is also used in the production of other barium compounds, as a corrosion inhibitor in petroleum refining, and in the manufacturing of ceramic glazes. However, due to its toxicity and potential for explosion, it is heavily regulated and its use is carefully controlled in industrial applications. Ingestion or inhalation of barium nitrite can be extremely harmful and precautions must be taken when handling and storing this chemical.
