Syntheses and coordination studies of 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine and its oxide towards mercury(II)

Several coordination complexes of mercury(II) have been synthesized by the reaction of mercury(II) salts with 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine (L1) and its corresponding oxide (L2). The synthesized complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy techniques. The crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Different geometries were observed around the metal center, including distorted trigonal-pyramidal (1,3), distorted tetrahedral (2) and distorted octahedral (4,5), with the degree of distortion depending on the steric effects and the chelating capability of 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine and its oxide.
