Taming the reactivity: Understanding the nucleophilicity of dioxindole under different reaction conditions is key to a direct and easy access to valuable spiro oxindole ? butyrolactones and 3-substituted 3-hydroxyoxindole derivatives in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (see scheme).
