Keten-mercaptals like 3,3-dimethylthio-acrylic acid esters react with ethyl 3-aminopyrazol-4-carboxylate under formation of methylmercaptan followed by cyclisation to give esters of 2-methylthio-1H-1,4-dihydro-4-oxopyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-8-carboxylic acid. The remaining methylthio group can be substituted by amines.
