Barium selenite, with the molecular formula BaSeO3 and a molecular weight of 264.2865 g/mol, is a white solid that is insoluble in water. It can be synthesized by adding sodium selenite to a solution of barium chloride or by treating a solution of barium chloride with selenous acid and adding sodium carbonate to initiate precipitation. Barium selenite has a heat of formation of △fH298 BaSeO3 = 2230.6 kcal/mol (—964.7 kJ/mol) and is stable upon heating to over 950 °C. It has weak oxidizing or reducing powers, and redox reactions can still occur. The majority of compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. Noncombustible, barium selenite itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes of SeO2.

Uses

Used in Glass Industry:
Barium selenite is used as a colorant and decolorizer for special glass, leading to the formation of glass with a high index of refraction. Its fine white crystalline powder form is ideal for this application, enhancing the optical properties of the glass produced.
Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Due to its weak oxidizing or reducing properties, barium selenite can be used in chemical synthesis processes where controlled redox reactions are required. Its stability upon heating makes it suitable for high-temperature synthesis applications.
Used in Research and Development:
Barium selenite's unique properties, such as its insolubility in water and stability at high temperatures, make it a valuable compound for research and development in various scientific fields, including materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Reactivity Profile

Barium selenite has weak oxidizing or reducing powers. Redox reactions can however still occur. The majority of compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. If soluble in water, then the solutions are usually neither strongly acidic nor strongly basic. These compounds are not water-reactive. Noncombustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes.

Health Hazard

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Fire Hazard

Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 13718-59-7 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,3,7,1 and 8 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 5 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 13718-59:
(7*1)+(6*3)+(5*7)+(4*1)+(3*8)+(2*5)+(1*9)=107
107 % 10 = 7
So 13718-59-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
