13746-66-2 Usage

Red prussiate, also known as Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) or potassium ferricyanide, is a bright red crystalline compound that is soluble in water. It is manufactured by passing chlorine into a solution of potassium ferrocyanide and is used in various applications due to its unique properties.

1. Analytical Chemistry:
Red prussiate is used as an external indicator in potassium dichromate titrations and as an electron transfer agent in amperometric biosensors, replacing an enzyme's natural electron transfer agent with the enzyme glucose oxidase.
2. Photography:
It is used as a pigment for staining in photography and as an oxidizing agent in photographic processing to remove silver from negatives and positives, a process called dot etching.
3. Textile Industry:
Red prussiate is used for staining wood, dyeing wool, and calico printing.
4. Metallurgy:
It is applied to harden iron and steel and is a component of Murakami's etchant for cemented carbides, providing contrast between binder and carbide phases.
5. Organic Synthesis:
Red prussiate is used as a mild oxidizing agent in organic synthesis.
6. Microbial Fuel Cells:
The addition of potassium ferricyanide in the catholyte can improve the generation of power in microbial fuel cells (MFCs).
7. Medical Applications:
Potassium ferricyanide can be used as a chromogenic reagent for the determination of captopril, which is used for the treatment of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and congestive heart failure.
8. Laboratory Reagent:
It is used as a laboratory reagent for various experiments and as a means of increasing a solution's redox potential.
9. Blueprints:
Red prussiate is chiefly used for blueprints and in the cyanotype process, where it is used with ferric ammonium citrate to sensitize paper.
10. Etching:
It is used as an etching liquid (Mercer's liquor) and in electroplating.
11. Wool Dyeing and Calico Printing:
Red prussiate is used in the dyeing of wool and calico printing, as well as in the preparation of Prussian Blue, a deep blue pigment used in blue printing.

Inhalation of 2000 mg/m3 of potassium ferricyanide by rats and mice led to accumulations of ferricyanide in the blood and urine by the first day. Almost total excretion of potassium ferricyanide took place via urine by the first day after administration (STN, 1999a). Hantson and coworkers (1996) reported that no reliable data concerning the bioavailability of potassium ferricyanide seems to exist while the bioavailability of cyanide from hexacyanoferrate, which was investigated in humans, was very poor.

Production Methods

The oxidation of ferrocyanide yields potassium ferricyanide. Potassium ferricyanide is used as a chemical reagent and in metallurgy, photography, and pigments.

Decomposes on strong heating to evolve highly toxic fumes, but the compound itself has low toxicity.

Flammability and Explosibility

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion. Not as toxic as the simple cyanides. Mutation data reported. Explosive reaction with ammonia, chromium trioxide (above 196°C), sodtum nitrite + heat. Violent reaction with Cu(NO3)2. Mixtures with chromium trioxide + silver grains ignite with friction. When heated to decomposition or on contact with acid or acid fumes it emits hghly toxic fumes of K2O and CN-. Used as a fmative in photography, as a metal cleaner, and for glass coatings.

Purification Methods

It has been recrystallised repeatedly from hot water (1.3mL/g) and dried under vacuum in a desiccator.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 13746-66-2 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,3,7,4 and 6 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 6 and 6 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 13746-66:
112 % 10 = 2
So 13746-66-2 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
