It is a dark brown or black solid that is soluble in water and organic solvents. Vanadium chloride oxide(VClO2) (9CI) is an important intermediate in the production of various vanadium-containing materials, such as vanadium alloys, catalysts, and pigments. Vanadium chloride oxide is synthesized by reacting vanadium(IV) oxide (V2O3) with chlorine gas (Cl2) at high temperatures. It is also used as a precursor in the preparation of other vanadium compounds, such as vanadium(IV) chloride (VCl4) and vanadium(V) oxide (V2O5).
