Plant growth regulating activities of 2-[2-(arylamino)-2-oxoethyl]benzoic acids (Part I)

The class of 2-[2-(arylamino)-2-oxoethyl]benzoic acids fulfills the structural requirements of phytotropins and is a homolog of the well-known phytotropin class of N-arylphthalamic acids. The series of derivatives (1-30) of Table I, prepared by reaction of 1H-2-benzopyran-1,3(4H)-dione with the suitable amine, were designed to assess the plant growth regulating properties of the class. The results of gravitropic and herbicidal assays confirm the phytotopins nature of 2-[2(arylamino)-2-oxoethyl]benzoic acids and show that their activity is generally lower than that of N-arylphthalamic acids. The influence on antigravitropic activity of the nature and type of substitution on the aryl of the arylaminocarbonyl moiety is examined.
