Synthesis of a papaverine analogue containing a quinazoline ring system (4-azapapaverine) was achieved. In the synthesis of 4-azapapaverine catalytic aroylation is a useful reaction.Preparation of several 4-aroyl-6,7-dimethoxyquinazolines was accomplished by aroylation.

4-Substituted quinazolines (II) have been prepared by the action of formamide on o-aminophenyl alkyl and aralkyl ketones (I) in the presence of borontrifluoride etherate as catalyst, and tested for their inotropic activity.

A true quinazoline analogue (IV) of papaverine has been synthesized directly starting from 2'-nitrodesoxyveratroin (II).Reduction of II to amino compound (III) followed by Leuckart reaction furnishes the title compound (IV).
