The 1,3-dipolar intermediates generated by addition of benzothiazole, to dialkyl acethylenedicarboxylates are trapped by 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds such as 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid, 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propandione, acetylacetone, 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione and indandione. The reactions proceeded smoothly at room temperature, and with good yields. The synthesised compounds have been characterised by elemental analyses and spectroscopic studies.
