Reactions of ethylene and propylene oxides with hydrogen selenide in a polar aprotic solvent in the presence of tin tetrachloride or p-toluenesulfonic acid give a mixture of 2-hydroxypropaneselenol and bis(2-hydroxypropyl) selenide respectively.Similarly, epichlorohydrin and 2,7-dimethyl-2,3-epoxy-5-octen-4-one give 3-selenetanol and a mixture of 3-hydroxy-6-isopropyltetrahydroseleno-4-pyranone and 5-isopropyltetrahydro-3-selenophenone.
