ABRAMOV REACTION IN 1,4-DIKETONE SERIES

Investigation of the reactions of some 1,4-diketones with dimethyl and diethyl hydrogen phosphites shows that the addition of a dialkyl hydrogen phosphite to one of the carbonyl groups is usually accompanied by cyclization with the formation of tetrahydro-α-hydroxyfurans.The latter may undergo decyclization with the formation of δ-keto phosphonates. 1,4-Diphenyl-1,4-butanedione forms products of the addition of dialkyl hydrogen phosphites both at one and at both carbonyl groups, and also phosphorylated tetrahydro-2,5-diphenylfurans.In a number of cases the formation of stereoisomeric compounds is observed.
