General Description
Calnexin is a type I integral membrane protein that resides in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and plays a key role in the folding and quality control of newly synthesized glycoproteins. It is a calcium-binding chaperone protein that assists in the folding of glycoproteins by interacting with high-mannose-type oligosaccharides on the nascent polypeptide chains. Calnexin acts as a molecular chaperone by preventing the aggregation of misfolded proteins and promoting their correct folding. It also interacts with other ER-resident proteins, such as calreticulin and ERp57, to form a protein complex involved in glycoprotein quality control. Additionally, calnexin has been implicated in various cellular processes, including cell adhesion, immune response, and calcium signaling.
