Friedel-Crafts reaction of p-xylene with succinic anhydride leads to β-(2,5-dimethylbenzoyl)propionic acid 1, which on Clemmensen reduction yields γ-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)butyric acid 2.Ester 3 of 2 is formylated with ethyl formate to give the formyl derivative 4.Cyclization of 4 with a mixture of sulphuric acid and orthophosphoric acid furnishes dihydronaphthoic acid ester 5, which on hydrolysis gives dihydronaphthoic acid 6, which has already been converted into occidol 8.
